Girl found alive under bodies of family in Alps shooting

A four-year-old girl miraculously survived a deadly gun attack in the French Alps that left her father, mother and grandmother dead and her elder sister seriously injured, officials said Thursday.
The little girl spent eight hours hidden between the bullet-riddled corpses of her mother and grandmother on the backseat of the British-registered family car following a mysterious and brutal shooting on the outskirts of a village on the edges of Lake Annecy.
A second man, believed to be a local who inadvertently cycled into the scene of the attack, was also found shot dead in the tree-lined car park on Wednesday afternoon.
The girl's elder sister, who was found shot next to the car, was in a stable condition in hospital after being flown by helicopter to the nearby city of Grenoble.
Eric Maillaud, the prosecutor in charge of the investigation, said the four-year-old had emerged from the car without any injury.
"She stayed, curled up under the bodies for eight hours and didn't move in all that time," he said.
The first police to arrive on the scene did not spot the girl and, with the car being left untouched and the area sealed off pending the arrival of forensic experts, she was left to endure a traumatic ordeal until she was finally discovered around midnight.
"It was only once we had access to the scene of the crime that we found her," Maillaud said. "The little girl spoke English. She heard noises, shouts but she can't tell us any more than that. She is only four years old.
"She is being looked after and we are doing everything we possibly can to care for her."
Lieutenant-Colonel Benoit Vinnemann, head of the Chambery gendarmerie, said the family had been staying at the nearby Saint Jorioz camp site, where fellow campers reported their disappearance on Wednesday evening.
The victims had still not been formally identified by 0730 GMT on Thursday. British consular officials were at the scene but the Foreign Office in London said it could not immediately confirm the identity of the victims or their nationality.
Chevaline and the surrounding area is popular with tourists and second homeowners from all over Europe, including many Britons.
French authorities said the victims were discovered by a passing cyclist aound 3:50 pm Wednesday. The father was in the driver's seat of the four-wheel drive BMW and the two women were in the backseat. The cyclist who was killed was found in front of the car.
The bodies were taken to Grenoble for autopsies.
Experts from the national gendarmerie's IRCGN unit collected DNA evidence from the scene and were checking spent bullet cartridges found at the scene in an attempt to identify the weapons used.

IPOH, Sept 5 ― A 19-year-old pregnant woman has taken to divulging the alleged physical abuses she suffered under the hands of her husband in Malaysia on social media, spawning a huge outcry among those who saw her posts and making headlines in the mainstream media.
On August 31 when Malaysians were celebrating the country’s independence, the woman posted up a short close-circuit television (CCTV) clip on her Facebook profile that clearly showed a man physically abusing a woman.
Accompanying the clip, she claimed that “This is the second session after I came out from the toilet after vomiting. As you can see in this video again he wouldn’t allow me to exit my shop & he snatch my phone from calling my mother & even beat me with the phone…”
The CCTV clip immediately went viral online and was shared by thousands of Facebook users up to Monday, when the post was taken down and the CCTV clip removed.
However, the woman’s claim of abuse has caught on among local Internet users, drawing criticisms against her allegedly abusive husband, while several bloggers also posted about her case complete with screen captures of both her and her husband’s Facebook status updates that chronicled a bitter family dispute between the couple.
The young woman, who claimed to be two months pregnant currently, also posted up numerous pictures of her injuries after the alleged assault along with a medical report by a hospital in Ipoh.
Yesterday, she posted another update seeking a “powerful and dedicated lawyer to help” her in her case. When The Malaysian Insider tried to contact her, her mother picked up the phone and said that they are currently at the police station recording a statement regarding the issue.
Perak CID Chief Senior Asst Comm Datuk Mohd Dzuraidi Ibrahim confirmed to The Malaysian Insider that that the police have received a report by the woman’s father on August 23 regarding the alleged assault.
He revealed that in the report, the victim’s father had claimed that his daughter was allegedly assaulted by her husband at around 4.30pm on August 23 and had been hospitalised in a private hospital for two days following the incident.
Mohd Dzuraidi said the victim’s 26-year-old husband had similarly lodged a police report against the victim and her family over a family dispute.
“The victim had lodged another report on September 3 to take further action against her husband. This case will be investigated under Section 323 of the Penal Code,” he said in a text message to The Malaysian Insider.
Section 323 of the Penal Code is for voluntarily causing hurt, and carries a jail term that may extend to one year or with fine or with both upon conviction.
He also said the couple owns a clothing boutique and that the cause of the incident was due to family disputes over the duo and their business.
“We are still investigating the case,” said the police officer.

Free sex with cleaner rides

KUALA LUMPUR: A massage parlour and a car wash outlet in Sunway Mentari have given new meaning to the phrase "customer loyalty". They have come up with a creative way to entice more customers to engage their services by offering free sex after nine car washes.
However, their three-month old "win-win" partnership went bust after police stormed the massage parlour on Monday night.
In the 9pm operation, nine Vietnamese women, believed to be prostitutes and GROs, aged between 18 and 28, were arrested.
Selangor National Key Result Area (NKRA) Crime Prevention Division officer-in-charge, ASP Emmi Shah Fadhil, said police got wind of the activity after the raiding team found several car wash loyalty cards from five customers who were caught having sex with the prostitutes.
"It was supposed to be just another routine operation," he said. Emmi Shah said the team later found out that customers who sent their cars to the nearby car wash will be given a loyalty card each.
"To get the extra 'offer', customers must send their cars for washing nine times within a certain period. The tenth car wash will entitle them to free sex," said Emmi Shah.
He said those who sought sex immediately would need to fork out between RM130 and RM180 per session.
"When we raided the premises, the women panicked. Some even tried to hide in the storeroom. Four men, believed to be the operators and caretakers, were also detained," he said.
Emmi Shah said besides the loyalty card, the team also found several condoms stashed inside a microwave.
Checks revealed the premises, equipped with CCTV, only allowed Chinese patrons to enter.
He said the women were found to have violated their social visit passes and had been working without permits.
They were taken to Petaling Jaya police headquarters for further investigations. Selangor police had conducted 4,220 raids and detained 2,304 women involved in prostitution and vice activities from January to Aug 31 this year. Out of the total, 214 women are locals while 2,090 are foreigners

Apple event invites hint at iPhone 5 debut

Apple invited members of the media to a September 12 event in San Francisco for what is expected to be the debut of a new-generation iPhone.
Email invitations bore the cryptic message, "It's almost here," and a large number "12" casting a shadow that appeared to be the number five, suggesting that the event would spotlight the long-anticipated iPhone 5.
Leaks and rumors portray the new iPhone as having a larger touch-screen than its predecessor and say that it will be available by the end of the month.
Demand for what is being referred to as "iPhone 5" is likely to be hot, with analysts convinced that many people in the market for handsets have put off purchases to wait for the latest offering from Apple.
"While our checks indicated consumers are delaying iPhone 4S purchases in anticipation of the iPhone 5, we anticipate an LTE iPhone 5 with a new hardware form factor will result in record iPhone sales," Canaccord Genuity brokerage firm said in a note to investors.
Apple shares ended the official trading day at $674.97 and then inched up to $675.25 in after-market trades.
Samsung mobile phones remained the most popular in the United States with 25.6 percent of the market, but third-place Apple gained ground to claim 16.3 percent as of the end of July, according to industry tracker comScore.
LG ranked second with 18.4 percent of the US mobile phone market.
Smartphones powered by Google's Android software continued to dominate with 52.2 percent of the US market, but Apple's iOS was the second most popular smartphone platform with 33.4 percent, comScore reported.
Apple is expected to host a separate media event in October to unveil a new, smaller version of its wildly popular iPad.
The 10-inch iPad has long dominated the tablet market, but faces a growing challenge from smaller models like Amazon's Kindle Fire, the Google Nexus 7 and the Samsung Galaxy.
Analysts believe Apple will launch an "iPad mini" later this year in a move that could allow the company to again best its global rivals despite the death last year of visionary founder Steve Jobs.
Microsoft, Google and Amazon.com are out to grab spotlights ahead of the Apple event with announcements of their own this week.
Nokia and US giant Microsoft are hosting a media event in New York City on Wednesday, most likely to launch one or more smartphones using the Windows Phone 8 operating system.
Nokia on Tuesday unveiled a free music streaming service for US customers with its Lumia handsets, without ads, as the firm seeks to gain traction in the smartphone market.
Nokia, once the leader in mobile phones, has been losing market share as consumers move to smartphones powered by Apple's iOS or Google's Android operating system.
The Finnish company's new strategy is phasing out its Symbian smartphones in favor of a partnership with Microsoft.
That alliance has produced a first line of Lumia smartphones, which Nokia is counting on to help it survive in a rapidly changing landscape.
Google-owned Motorola Mobility and US telecom titan Verizon Wireless will host their own New York City event on Wednesday, with analysts predicting they will introduce a beefed-up Razr smartphone powered by Android software.
A day later, Amazon.com is expected to debut a new version of its popular Kindle tablets at an event in Southern California.
Meanwhile, Taiwan-based consumer electronics titan HTC plans a September 19 event in New York City, at which it is expected to unveil slick new smartphones powered by Microsoft's new Windows 8 mobile software platform.
