IPOH, Sept 5 ― A 19-year-old pregnant woman has taken to divulging the alleged physical abuses she suffered under the hands of her husband in Malaysia on social media, spawning a huge outcry among those who saw her posts and making headlines in the mainstream media.
On August 31 when Malaysians were celebrating the country’s independence, the woman posted up a short close-circuit television (CCTV) clip on her Facebook profile that clearly showed a man physically abusing a woman.
Accompanying the clip, she claimed that “This is the second session after I came out from the toilet after vomiting. As you can see in this video again he wouldn’t allow me to exit my shop & he snatch my phone from calling my mother & even beat me with the phone…”
The CCTV clip immediately went viral online and was shared by thousands of Facebook users up to Monday, when the post was taken down and the CCTV clip removed.
However, the woman’s claim of abuse has caught on among local Internet users, drawing criticisms against her allegedly abusive husband, while several bloggers also posted about her case complete with screen captures of both her and her husband’s Facebook status updates that chronicled a bitter family dispute between the couple.
The young woman, who claimed to be two months pregnant currently, also posted up numerous pictures of her injuries after the alleged assault along with a medical report by a hospital in Ipoh.
Yesterday, she posted another update seeking a “powerful and dedicated lawyer to help” her in her case. When The Malaysian Insider tried to contact her, her mother picked up the phone and said that they are currently at the police station recording a statement regarding the issue.
Perak CID Chief Senior Asst Comm Datuk Mohd Dzuraidi Ibrahim confirmed to The Malaysian Insider that that the police have received a report by the woman’s father on August 23 regarding the alleged assault.
He revealed that in the report, the victim’s father had claimed that his daughter was allegedly assaulted by her husband at around 4.30pm on August 23 and had been hospitalised in a private hospital for two days following the incident.
Mohd Dzuraidi said the victim’s 26-year-old husband had similarly lodged a police report against the victim and her family over a family dispute.
“The victim had lodged another report on September 3 to take further action against her husband. This case will be investigated under Section 323 of the Penal Code,” he said in a text message to The Malaysian Insider.
Section 323 of the Penal Code is for voluntarily causing hurt, and carries a jail term that may extend to one year or with fine or with both upon conviction.
He also said the couple owns a clothing boutique and that the cause of the incident was due to family disputes over the duo and their business.
“We are still investigating the case,” said the police officer.
